Sulfur water, or hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), is a common issue in well water supplies, characterized by its distinct rotten egg smell. Even at low concentrations — as little as 0.25 parts per million (ppm) or milligrams per liter (mg/L) — the odor can be quite noticeable and unpleasant. While sulfur is not typically harmful to humans at these levels, it can be toxic at high atmospheric concentrations, flammable, and corrosive to metals, causing tarnishing of silverware, for example.
The presence of sulfur in well water is due to naturally occurring and harmless sulfate-reducing bacteria found in groundwater supplies. Air injection systems require very little maintenance and, if sized and installed correctly, can handle high hydrogen sulfide concentrations with ease.
Hot water that smells like rotten eggs but the cold water has no smell indicates iron bleed-through your existing well water treatment system, and service is required. Once the iron is removed, the rotten egg smell will disappear.
It is not advisable to remove the anode from your water heater (or replace the heater) to reduce the smell. A new water heater with a new zinc anode will make the water smell the same, if not worse. There are replacement anodes made from aluminum and/or magnesium — these types of anodes work but have a lower reactivity level (fewer sacrificial electrons) and therefore don't protect water heaters as well as zinc anodes. A sacrificial anode (like the one found on a boat engine) is there to corrode away instead of the metal parts of a water heater; removing this anode will void the warranty of your heater and greatly shorten its life expectancy.
